pullbuoy british swimmers of the year 2004

Better late than never, as they say; 2004 may be only a memory, but there is still the need to select pullbuoy's British swimmers of the year for last year. It was a year of mixed fortunes from Britain's swimmers, with the highs of the olympic trials not translating into an avalanche of medals in Athens, but there were still many notable performances along the way.

Olympic bronze medals from David Davies and the ever popular Steve Parry, the 2002 winner of this poll, will stand them in good stead in the men's category, while James Goddard and Simon Burnett also performed well in Athens. Elsewhere, Gregor Tait and Darren Mew both produced excellent swims in the Sheffield trials to put them as outside contenders.

Amongst the female contingent, Melanie Marshall finished the year ranked number 1 in the world over 200m freestyle long course despite her Athens disappointments, while Stephanie Proud became Britain's most successful junior swimmer ever as she took her 5th gold medal at the European Juniors. Meanwhile there were Olympic final appearances for Rebecca Cooke and Katy Sexton.

Who will succeed the 2003 winners, world champions Katy Sexton and James Gibson? You can help decide by voting below - the results will be announced at the start of March.
