A surprise win for Kiorsty Balfour who finally managed to capitalise on a place in lane 4 to win her first national title. Nova’s Heidi Earp finished as first english swimmer in second but was well outside the qualifying mark. A tremendous swim from 15 year old Kate Heywood nearly upset everyone, and at one stage it looked like she might break the BR, but was overhauled in the final few metres to finish 3rd. She may yet get a place in Manchester. British record holder Jaime King could only manage 4th and like Earp will have to rely on Bill Sweetenham’s discretion for a place on the team.
