British team for Barcelona announced

No sooner had we speculated that the British team for this summers world championships was going to be smaller than that from two years ago (See who'd be a selector?), than the actual team was announced as containing 34 swimmers - 7 more than made the trip to Japan. Exact individual events for each swimmer have not been announced, but given that only 14 swimmers were assured of their place in the squad following the Trials and Stage 3 meet, that leaves further 20 swimmers who have now been selected. Sheppard Awarded MBE

Alison Sheppard, holder of the British and Commonwealth record in the 50m freestyle has been awarded the MBE in the Queen's Birthday Honours List.

"I'm very excited about receiving an MBE. There haven't been many swimmers to be awarded an honour of this kind so to me it's extremely special," she said. "It's a great privilege to be thought of in this way. I have been swimming internationally now for 15 years and I think that this award comes as a mark of the dedication I have shown to the sport over that time."

World record in men's 200m breaststroke

Russia's Dimitri Komornikov broke the first long course world record of the year at the Mare Nostrum meeting in Barcelona on Saturday. Komornikov posted a time of 2:09.52 for the 200 breast, beating the old record set by Japan's Kitajima at last year's Asian Games.
