haywood blasts to british record

Kate Haywood posted the best swim of the opening night of the British World Championship trials as she scorched her way to a new British Record in the Women’s 100m breaststroke. Swimming in the semi finals, the Loughborough university swimmer recorded a world class time of 1:08.14, to lower the previous mark by over half a second.

Unsurprisingly that swim qualified her fastest for the final, nearly two seconds ahead of nearest rival Kirsty Balfour. Haywood will have to produce a similar performance tomorrow night to be sure of selection for the world team, but starts as a heavy favourite to do so.
David Carry took the only gold medal on offer in the men’s 400mk freestyle, comprehensively out-swimming Athens bronze medallist David DAives to touch home in 3:50.30. The swim was personal beast but was outside the qualification standard, co Carry must now look to the second chance qualification Stage 3 meet later this year.
In other semi final action, it was a series of solid but unspectacular performances as all of the established names progresses to their respective finals. Many of the swimmers will need to make significant improvements if they are to get themselves team berths for Montreal.
