Six GB Olympians prepare for final run in at French Open

With the Rio Olympics just over a month away, six of Britain’s team ventured to the French Open in Vichy to complete their final racing preparations prior to rest and tapers and a trip to the British holding camp in Belo Horizonte in late July. And a successful trip to the continent it turned out to be.

Pick of the bunch was Jazz Carlin who took a brace of wins over 400m and 800m freestyle in 4:05.37 and 8:24.59 respectively, and also showed some decent unrested speed in the 200m, with a fourth placed finish in 1:59.44. That race was literally minutes after the conclusion of the 800m so a good test for Carlin. Matching her for individual wins was Adam Peaty who took 50m and 100m breaststroke golds. The longer event was completed in 59.41, relatively pedestrian by his own sky high standards but a useful marker for this stage of his preparation, while the splash and dash gold came with a time of 27.06s. Georgia Davies was another to secure two golds, her 1:00.18 victory over 100m backstroke adding to a 27.69 win in the 50m event.

Vichy also provided a useful sprint workout for Francesca Halsall who took silver in the 50m freestyle in 24.48, just a fingernail behind defending Olympic champion Ranomi Kromowidjojo. Halsall also completed heats of the 50m backstroke and butterfly, before opting out of both finals.

The other two to make the trip to France were also visitors to the podium. Andrew Willis won the 200m breaststroke in 2:12.34, following up with a 6th placed finish in the 100m event, while Chris Walker-Hebborn was a double silver medallist in the sprint backstroke events. He took the runner up spot in the 100m in 54.92 and managed the same result in the 50m in 25.31.
