A fine morning saw British swimmers successfully negotiate the heats to tonight’s semis and finals, but the evening forecast does not look so bright and the possibility of a washout cannot be discounted. Nonetheless it should be a good session for Britain with several medal hopes, particularly among the women in the shape of Kirsty Balfour, Kate Haywood, Mel Marshall and Rebecca Cooke to look forward too.
This morning however, in a lacklustre set of 200m freestyle semi finals, both David Carry and Simon Burnett safely made their way to tonight’s finals, with the qualifiers headed by Pieter van den Hoogenband, although the times were all slower than yesterday’s heats. Burnett will take up lane 2 while Carry occupies Lane 7.
In the heats proper, Joe Roebuck added a 200m butterfly semi final to his 200Im final place, but Hannah Miley just missed out on 200IM semis as she swam to 17th place.
Katy Sexton qualified for the semi finals of the 100m backstroke along with Lizzie Simmonds who faces a busy afternoon – a final of the 200m event postponed from last night followed by a semi final swim over the two lap event.
Meanwhile, Matt Clay headed the 50m backstroke qualifiers with team-mate Liam Tancock in 7th and both Kris Gilchrist and James Kirton successfully negotiated the first round to take up semi final places in the 200m breaststroke.
