A fantastic way to wrap up the year’s international swimming as Britain topped the medal table at the European Short Course Championships in Otopeni, Romania. 23 medals means a lot for Steve, Katie and Bob to get their teeth into.

It was an early season long course shake out for a host of GB swimmers who competed at the Rotterdam Qualification Meet over the weekend. A big group from the Bath Performance Centre was added to by swimmers from Loughborough, Stirling and a number of other squads, and a number of eye catching performances resulted.

A big British team will head to the European Short Championships at the start of December, but before they jump on a plane for Romania there’s the small matter of selection for the 2024 World Championships to be resolved, with a team due to be named at the end of November and relays sure to be a key focus.

No sooner had British Swimming announced their funding lists for 2023/24, they also announced a bumper sized squad would head to Romania in December to contest the European Short Course Championships. A team of 35 is large for a meet in a 25m format that doesn’t always attract significant support from British Swimming, but this probably reflects the needs of the coming Olympic season
