Flying Scotsman – Day 2 Selection update

The second night of finals in London brought some excellent racing as further names were inked in to the British team for the summer’s world championships.

Topping the bill was a furious head to head between Loughborough teammates Abbie Wood and Freya Colbert over 400 IM. Wood got herself a handy lead at 300m, but Colbert was not about to let her have it all her own way as she bore down on the final 50m. In the end wood hung on to win in a PB and world qualifying standard of 4:36.66 with Colbert also under the selection mark.

There was also a great showdown between Duncan Scott and Ed Mildred in the 200m butterfly. Scott broke the Scottish Record with a huge PB of 1:54.89, moving him up to 2nd on the all time GB list. Mildred, having pushed the Stirling swimmer all the way, had to settle for another big PB as he finished second in 1:56.21. Scott confirmed in the mixed zone that he will not be adding this event to his programme for the summer however,

The men’s 400IM saw Max Litchfield sneak under the qualifying standard in 4:11.59, while Katie Shanahan just missed sneaking under the 60s mark in the 100 backstroke, touching first in 1:00.03. She has dropped the 400IM for this season to add the shorter backstroke to her programme and she dropped her PB by more than 1s over the course of the day.

Elsewhere, Amelie Blocksidge ground out a commanding win in the 1500 freestyle, but her 16:23.54 was off her PB and some way from world championship qualification, while in the non-selection 50m breaststroke, Max Morgan made some amends for his first night disappointment with a win over Archie Goodburn.
