The following is the official list of British entrants in the 2005 World Championships. Several swimmers have been given additional swims from those that they qualified in at the trials and stage 3 meets.
Loughborough University’s Caitlin McClatchey was the star of the final two days of the Stage 3 selection meet in Swansea, as she erased the oldest women’s British Record still in the books. Already slated to swim in the 4x200m freestyle relay, McClatchey’s swim of 4:07.02 destroyed Sarah Hardcastle’s 1986 effort of 4:07.68.
David Carry smashed his personal best over 400m freestyle to qualify for the World Championships at the Stage 3 Selection meet in Swansea. The Scot was one of three new names added to the team sheet ahead of next month’s competition in Montreal.
British 200m freestyle record holder Simon Burnett will miss this year’s world championships following an illness. Meanwhile Matt Kidd has announced his retirement from swimming.
Despite being pregnant, Alison Sheppard is considering a comeback to elite competition. The 32-year-old Commonwealth Champion over 50m freestyle has competed at the last five Olympics and is thinking of going for a place in the freestyle event for the 2008 Beijing games.
