burnett rounds off in style
In a fitting climax to the Commonwealth Games Trials, Simon Burnett, undoubtedly the swimmer of the week, set his 5th British record, lowering the 100m freestyle standard again as he confirmed his third individual swim. He was joined on the team by Jo Jackson who qualified in the 400m freestyle, while Chris Cook added another swim to his programme by winning the 50m breaststroke.

The English Commonwealth Trials are fast becoming the Simon Burnett show as the Arizona based swimmer set his fourth British Record of the meet last night. Qualifying fastest from the semi finals Burnett blasted a 48.76 to knock 0.89s off Matt Kidd’s existing mark and become the first British man under 49 seconds. In the night’s only finals there were wins for Gregor Tait in the 200IM and David Davies over 1500m.

Simon Burnett blasted his third British record of the meet as he erased the 50m freestyle mark and booked his second event for the Commonwealth Games. Chris Cook also continued the good form he had shown in Montreal to win the 100m breaststroke and confirm his place for Melbourne.

Rebecca Cooke was the only swimmer to add her name to England’s Commonwealth Games team on the third night of the trials in Sheffield. Meanwhile Simon Burnett reinforced his good form, as he moved to within a tenth of a second of Mark Fosters’s 50m freestyle British Record.
