A commonwealth and british record from Alison Sheppard secured her place as fastest qualifier for the 50 free final, where she will renew her rivalry with Therese Alsjammer. These two were well ahead of third placed Ros Brett, who will need to improve to be in contention, but who made the qualifying time. Surprisingly Melanie Marshall, perhaps affected by her efforts in the 50 backstroke, missed out on the final, finishing 9th.
