Adam Peaty will not need to better his 100m breaststroke World Record to win gold in Rio according to predictions made by German swimming coach and statistician Joshua Neuloh. He has pulled together his quadrennial Swimnex summary of predicted time standards at the Olympic Games which show a time of 58.14 being enough for Gold on 7th August.
As he touched the wall at the end of the dogfight that was the 200m freestyle at British trials, the results on the board were clear for Robbie Renwick. He’d confirmed his place in Rio as part of the 4x200m freestyle relay and as such he would be on the plane to the Olympics for the third time.
It was the event with possibly the most expectation, and in the end by virtue of its relay implications was the only one that raised any significant disquiet in terms of the Olympic team selection. Mindful that they were taking the world champion men’s 4 x 200 freestyle relay to Rio Britain’s selectors opted to to keep their options wide open, selecting no fewer than 7 swimmers for that squad from which to perm a team of four.
The week at trials in Glasgow was going quite well for Duncan Scott as the last evening session got underway. He was by then national champion in the 100m freestyle in a personal best time, and potentially had booked a spot in the medley relay, but there was nothing concrete leading into the final event of the whole meet.
