After the fireworks in night 3 in London, the fourth night of competition always had the possibility of being a little anti-climactic, but while the record books remained untouched, there were plenty of swims that demanded selection as we move to the business end of the meet.
Indeed for some teams the maximum sizes will soon come into play and the last two days could be a touch nerve wracking for those near the cut off points. A full update is below.
Note this is only our interpretation of how the policies will be applied and final selections need to be confirmed by the relevant selectors in due course.
Britain
There was an incremental change to the GB position as 3 new names added themselves to the roster in individual events. These were Eva Okaro in the 50 fly, Jack Skerry in the 50 backstroke and Jacob Peters in the 100 butterfly.
Skerry had finished runner up to a 10th consecutive British backstroke title for Ollie Morgan. Both men set lifetime bests with 24.36 and 24.66 respectively to confirm their trips to Paris. There are short odds that Morgan makes it 11 in a row in the 200m on Sunday.
Ed Mildred’s victory in the 100 fly was the final piece of the jigsaw to confirm the men’s medley team selection for the Euros.
With 40 spots to fill, and 25 selections as things stand, it looks like everyone who makes the times will be able to travel.
England
Things are starting to get tight for those hoping to make the English team for Glasgow. With 2 days to go the potential roster hit the limit of 28 swimmers which suggests that some athletes with nomination standards will now miss out.
Today’s events saw the men’s medley team confirmed along with nomination standards for Skerry, Peters and Okaro as new names on the potential team sheet, plus Harriet Rogers over 50m Butterfly and Honey Osrin over 200m backstroke . At only 0.04% under their respective nomination standards, neither of those swimmer is especially secure.
Scotland
If England is getting tight for space, Scotland are not far behind as more names were thrown into the hat. Katie Shanahan got her first nomination time in the 200 backstroke alongside Stirling teammate Holly McGill, while Evan Jones confirmed an individual spot in the 200IM. There were 2 more new faces with Scott Gibson and Jamie Ferguson both posting nomination standards in the 50m backstroke.
As with GB and England the Scottish men’s medley team rubber stamped their spot and as this is a priority event for Scotland, that all but guarantees Matt Ward, Archie Goodburn, Dean Fearn and Evan Jones their spots regardless of other selection shake ups.
Wales
The main story for Wales on night 4 was a new Welsh Record of 51.81 for Lewis Fraser in the 100 fly. He was already in the selection frame but improved his lifetime best for good measure.
