Commonwealth Trials – Day 2 Finals/Semis

Womens 50 fly:

Rosalind Brett recorded a Commonwealth qualifying time of 27.25 to finish 0.74sec ahead of her Loughborough team mate Julie Douglas in the final of the 50 fly. She was just outside the English record she recorded in the semi-finals of 27.14.

Excitement in the mens 50 Back with Martin Harris and Adam Ruckwood dead heating for the title in 26.38.

Womens 50 Breast:

As expected Zoe Baker comfortably retained her 50 breastroke title, but had to be content with 31.33 rather than the world record she had been hoping for. Heidi Earp was 1.5s down in Second place but will be looking for a performace in the longer events.

Mens 50 fly:

No real surprises in the 50 fly semis – with pretty much the top 8 expected qualifying – apart from Mark Fosters performace. Mark foster was expected to put more into the smei than the heat but led teh qualifiers into the final in 24.70. Todd Cooper qualified second.

Mens 100m Breaststroke

Darren Mew finally broke Nick Gillingham’s 10 year old British record to lead teh qualifiers for the final – his time of 1.01.20 shaved 0.13 off Gillingham’s record. Edmond, Whitehead and Gibson all made it safely through. Mew has promised more in the final – perhaps a swim under 61s?

Experience won out in the 100 free semis with Karen Pickeirng and Alison Sheppard heading the qualifiers for the final. As predicted Vicky Cook moved up to take a finals berth but watch out for Rosalind Brett from lane 6 in the final as one of the main contenders.

James Salter won the 200 free by a clear margin over David Carry of Scotland, who will have impressed his national selectors, picking up some impressive English scalps and setting a new Scottish record. Paul Palmer was dissapointing in 5th and now looks like missing out on the games.

Sarah Price continued her march towards the 100 back title, qualifying more than a second ahead of her nearest rival. 13 year old Stephanie Proud impressed again, qualifying in 4th behind Jo Farghus and Katy Sexton.
