European Junior Championships – Day 3

No medals for Britain’s juniors on the third day of competition in Austria, but all eyes were on Kate Haywood, who produced a stunning swim in the semi finals of the 100 breastroke.

Haywood from Lincoln Vulcans is the youngest member of England’s commonwealth team, and if she repeats the form she showed in the 100m, she will be a genuine medal contender. Her time of 1:09.85 was a British Junior record by almost a second and was only 0.2s off the British Senior record of Jaime King. The swim makes her only the third British women to dip under the 1:10 barrier – nova’s Heidi Earp having been the first. Despite this, Haywood only qualified second, but will be aiming for the gold and the British record in the final, where she will have to beat 200m winner Mirna Jukic of Austria.

In the rest of the session’s swimming, Julia Beckett finished 5th in her semi-final of the 50 backstroke to just miss out on a finals spot and Laura Campbell recorded a PB to finish 13th in the 100m fly semi finals.
