24 GB Swimmers set for Berlin World Cup

With the whirlwind of an unprecedented long course summer now consigned to history, the short course season kicks off in earnest this weekend in Berlin as the Swimming Workd Cup series returns.

With no ISL this year due to the ongoing war in Ukraine, the FINA series represents the main route to racing in the small pool ahead of the short course world championships that take place in Melbourne in December.

For this first World Cup stop, a team of 24 GB swimmers boasting a mix of youth and experience will be flying the Union Jack in Germany. The group includes squads from Loughborough and Scottish Swimming and a focus group of junior girls who will race under the mentorship of the more senior athletes as they gain experience of senior racing.

Chief amongst them is Olympian Abbie Wood who has proven through her ISL exploits to be one of the best SC swimmers around. After a difficult summer and having had a break from the water this is a chance to reset and hone racing skills once more, while taking the opportunity to pass on her experience.

Another swimmer with ISL credentials to watch is Imogen Clark, the only woman to set a LC British Record this year. With a firm focus on the 50m breaststroke and riding a wave of success from Birmingham and Rome, she might just fancy lowering her own SC British Record too.

The Scottish contingent is headed by London Roar stalwart Katie Shanahan and Keanna Macinnes who will be keen to build on an impressive showing at the European Championships. Kara Hanlon is also racing to further build her experience in senior waters.

Only 6 men make the trip to Germany, including Scott Gibson who came close to the Scottish Record LC in the 50 backstroke in the summer, and may fancy a crack at his own SC version this weekend.
