It’s now or never for British swimmers hoping to make the grade for Tokyo as the final selection chance looms in Glasgow this week. With the Trials and the European Championships out of the way, the British Swimming Glasgow Meet is the final opportunity to post a time faster than the consideration time needed to bag one of the remaining places in the team.
It was a superb week of swimming for Britain at the European championships in Budapest, with a haul of 26 medals, including 11 gold, lifting the team to the head of the medal table. The fate of Britain’s female freestyle relays was one of the selection questions that needed answering in the heat of competition in Budapest. With the qualification deadline looming on 31st May, this was the last chance for the two teams to set times and secure their spots in Tokyo, subject of course to the selectors giving them the nod.
Britain’s swimmers begin their European Championships campaign in Budapest this week in a sort of grey area. For the 28 swimmers already nominated for the Olympic games, this is a staging post to the main event, a meet to swim through and hone racing skills, while not being overly concerned at the outcomes. The Europeans in Olympic year are ever thus but there are nonetheless some big questions to be settled this week in Hungary.
Following a trials meet that exceeded most expectations in terms of the quality in the pool Britain’s selectors have named a team of 28 swimmers in the first round of Olympic selection, with 24 swimmers added to the four swimmers already named.
