Britain picks team of 28 for World Championships

Following the conclusion of the Aquatics GB Championships last weekend, Aquatics GB have now confirmed a team of 28 who will compete at the World Championships in Singapore in the summer.

22 of these swimmers are as expected, following the criteria set out in the selection policy with the five preselected swimmers joined by the eight individual event winners who made the selection times and seven who were part of successful relay quartets. That left a maximum of eight additional swimmers who could be added under the discretion of the selectors, and six of those have been taken up.

Jack McMillan reprises his 4x200m freestyle relay role from Paris, and is joined by Evan Jones, 5th in the 200m in London to provide additional squad depth.

Jonny Marshall who fell just 0.01 shy of the 100m backstroke qualification time is added and should be expected to swim that as well as providing an alterative to Ollie Morgan in the medley relays. Emily Richards was also very close to the time, falling les than 0.3s shy of the 200m butterfly time and as the next closest to the standard it was no surprise to see her added, and she and husband Matt become what is believed to be the first married couple to represent GB.

For the final two it was interesting to note the inclusion of a statement around Olympic medal potential in the 50m events in the justification given for the discretionary picks, something that was not a consideration when the policy was written. Undoubtedly that helped Lauren Cox’s case for selection given she won a bronze in the 50m backstroke in Fukuoka two years ago but she also provides relay back up for the medley relays.

For Max Morgan he won the 50m breaststroke but also provides relay cover for Greg Butler. He was at 100.75% of the 100m breaststroke time but with Adam Peary notionally pre-selected (and now confirmed not to be going) there was only one spot up for grabs.

Of those who missed out, Kara Hanlon might feel a little hard done by and a case could have been made for including an up and coming swimmer such as Jack Brown but it’s hard to make convincing arguments for any other additions based on performances in London.
