The 2025 British Swimming Championships came to a close with backstroke and breaststroke excitement and the now customary 200m freestyle shoot out as events came to a close in London.
It was no surprise to see Angharad Evans complete the double of 100m and 200m breaststroke as she dominated the shorter event final. Her time of 1:05.37 broke her own British Record and secured her second worlds qualification time. That was despite being slower to 50m than the previous record, her speed endurance carrying her home. Kara Hanlon was the runner up in 1:06.93 which was shy of the time needed for selection.
What was a surprise was the outcome in the men’s 200 free – as if the event couldn’t bring by any more drama this time it ended in a tie between James Guy and Duncan Scott who could not be separated in 1:45.08. That was after Matt Richards had used his free hit to split 49.80 at halfway before paying for it down the stretch. Jack McMillan rounded out the top 4 and it would seem likely he’ll get a discretionary pick as relay cover.
At last year’s Olympic trials the men’s 200m backstroke had delivered one of the most dramatic races of the week. This year was the exact opposite as Ollie Morgan dominated the race to win in almost a complete reversal from last year. He went out fast and was holding on for grim death as Luke Greenbank chased him down hard – Morgan won with a PB of 1:55.55 to 1:56.20 but both were well under the worlds QT.

In the women’s 100 free Freya Anderson bounced back from her 200 free disappointment to hold off a fast finishing Eva Okaro by just 0.01 to take the title in 54.09. Freya Colbert and a huge swim from 16 year old Theodora Taylor made up the top four, but the cumulative time fell shy of the qualification stages, as had Anderson’s victory mark.
Amelie Blocksidge completed a distance double by winning the 800m freestyle but her time of 8:37.95 was some way from the Singapore qualifying time. Fleur Lewis was 5 seconds back in silver with Lucy Fox taking bronze.
The last non-selection event, the men’s 50m butterfly was won by Ben Proud in 23.21. Jacob Peters had qualified fastest from the heats but in the final had to settle for a joint silver with his Bath teammate Josh Gammon in 23.44.
A full set of selection standings at the conclusion of the meet is available below. Note this is only our interpretation of how the policy will be applied and final selections need to be confirmed by the selectors in due course.
Could you do for juniors too?
